During a recent inspection of a newly constructed home, we took photos of the floor joists, and I would like to point out my concerns regarding the placement and sizing of holes in I-joists. The manufacturer's guidelines, such as those provided by Boise Cascade, typically include strict specifications for hole placement to maintain the structural integrity of the joists. Holes near bearing columns or studs and those exceeding allowed sizes can compromise load-bearing capacity and overall stability. Improper hole placement can cause the I-joist to sag, resulting in squeaking and unlevel floors. This situation may not be noticeable until the house settles and live loads such as furniture, are placed on floors.
When we observe an issue like this, we recommend that these deviations be assessed by a structural engineer or contractor experienced with I-Joist products. They can determine whether corrective actions are necessary to ensure the structure meets safety and durability standards.
