WHAT’S THE RIGHT WATER TEMPERATURE?

While performing Home Inspections, we take the water temperature at the kitchen, if it is over 120 degrees, we recommend lowering the water temperature to no more than 120 degrees. This question often arises: isn’t it necessary to set water heaters to a temperature higher than 120 degrees to ensure that dishes are sanitized when washed in the dishwasher and sink?

Safety experts advise against water heater settings above 120 degrees. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, six seconds of exposure to 140-degree water or 30 seconds to 130-degree water will cause a burn. Washing dishes in warm, soapy water will get them clean. Today’s dishwashers have heat boosters that raise the wash water temperature to 140 degrees and higher to sanitize dishes.
